Networking: The Young Minds of the ÖPG

Young Minds‘ logo (OEPG)

Young Minds‘ logo (OEPG)

The Young Minds workgroup of the ÖPG is experiencing an upswing; especially in Graz, interest continues to grow.

The Young Minds workgroup of the Austrian Physical Society (ÖPG) takes care of the interests of young physicists. The Young Minds represent students, PhD students and post-docs, as well as graduates whose last degree was obtained less than ten years ago, in the ÖPG, but also in the European Physical Society (EPS). Among other things, they pursue the promotion of physics research and its visibility in Austria and beyond, provide a communication platform for physicists of all career levels and support their international cooperation.

The regular organization of small seminars is one of the core competences of the Young Minds, as is the intensive support of students on their way into and later through their physics studies. In this context, it is particularly gratifying that this year's Energy and Teachers' Day, which will take place on September 26, 2023, will be held in Graz. Here, students can participate in outstanding lectures on the topic of sustainability and many other areas.

These events are organized and supervised by dedicated physicists. The growth in membership that the Young Minds are experiencing is therefore particularly important and gratifying. Any interest in the Young Minds is therefore welcome, especially from physicists of the University and the Graz University of Technology.

On October 13 and 14, the consortium NanoGraz of the Research Career Campus at the University of Graz organized a two-day event to inform the consortium's doctoral students about their career options after completing their doctorate. In addition to exciting lectures by early-career researchers as well as representatives from industry, the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), and the research management of the University of Graz, a brainstorming competition took place on the second day, in which the participants had the opportunity to develop their own joint mini-projects.
